Overview of the Coin Collection of The Czech Republic
Also known as Czechia, it is a landlocked country in Central Europe. Historically known as Bohemia, it is bordered by Austria to the south, Germany to the west, Poland to the northeast, and Slovakia to the southeast.
Introduction
The koruna, or crown, has been the currency of the Czech Republic since 1993. It is one of the European Union’s official currencies, and the Czech Republic is legally bound to adopt the euro in the future. In Czech, it is officially known as koruna česká.
Evolution
In 1993, coins were introduced in denominations of 10, 20, and 50 haléřů (h), 1 Kč, 2 Kč, 5 Kč, 10 Kč, 20 Kč, and 50 Kč. Over time, the 10 h and 20 h coins were phased out by October 31, 2003, and the 50 h coins by August 31, 2008, due to declining purchasing power and circulation issues. Since 1997, the Czech Mint has issued yearly collector sets featuring proof-quality coins. The tradition also includes issuing commemorative coins, including silver and gold coins, for numismatic enthusiasts.
