Overview of the Coin Collection of Japan
Japan is an island country in East Asia, located in the northwest Pacific Ocean.
Introduction
The yen (JPY) is the official currency of Japan. It is the third-most traded currency in the foreign exchange market, following the United States dollar and the euro. The yen is also widely used as a reserve currency.
Evolution
The New Currency Act of 1871 introduced Japan’s modern currency system, with the yen defined in terms of gold and silver. It replaced the Tokugawa coinage and various han (fief) paper currencies. The Bank of Japan, founded in 1882, was given a monopoly on controlling the money supply.
The coins currently in circulation include denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 500 yen.
