Overview of the Coin Collection of New Zealand
New Zealand is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, comprised of the North Island, the South Island, and over 700 smaller islands.
Introduction
On 10 July 1967, New Zealand replaced the New Zealand pound with the New Zealand dollar at a rate of one pound to two dollars. Decimal coins were introduced on the same day, marking a significant shift in the country’s currency system. The initial coins of the New Zealand dollar included 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, and 50c denominations.
Evolution
The introduction of the New Zealand dollar brought about new coin sizes and compositions. Coins such as the 1c and 2c were minted in bronze, while the 50c was made of cupronickel. The 5c, 10c, and 20c coins retained the size, weight, and value of former sixpence, shilling, and florin coins until 1970, with the 10c coin initially bearing the additional legend “One Shilling”. In 1986, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on New Zealand coins was updated to Raphael Maklouf’s new design.
Currently, New Zealand coins in circulation include denominations of 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, $1, and $2. Each coin features distinctive designs that often reflect New Zealand’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and significant national symbols. The coins are minted to metric specifications, with $1 and $2 coins introduced in 1991 to replace their corresponding banknotes.
